STEPS FOR FINDING A PRAYER PARTNER
I. ASK GOD to direct you in this process!
|
II. WRITE DOWN a list of names:
- Friends
- Neighbors
- Relatives
- Work Associates
|
III. PICK THREE that you think / feel God is bringing to your attention
-
-
-
|
IV. PRAY for these three for a couple of weeks
- When you pray, notice what specifically God may bring to your mind to pray for, for these folks.
|
V. WAIT
- Until you "run into" one of the three people above or...
- You think / feel you are suppose to call one of the people above
|
VI. THEN INVITE them to be your Prayer Partner
- You might start the conversation by saying something like...
- "I'm looking for someone to meet with about once a week over coffee, to reflect with on my Spiritual Journey. Would you consider being my Prayer Partner?"
- If they seem interested, give them a Mentoring Manual to look over. Let them know you plan to do about one or two pages a week
- Decide on a time and place to meet.
- After the tow of you have been meeting or a few weeks...
- You may want to invite your partner to join you at Worship (offer to pick them up!)
- Then, invite them to be a part of a ministry outside the church or within the church
- When you think/feel it is appropriate, INVITE them to join the fellowship, the Body of Christ, the Church

FAITH DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
Types of Faith
|
Attitudes regarding the Types
|
The Wizard of Oz as a Metaphor *
|
I. Experienced Faith
|
Accepted: Childhood nurturing
Affective - from loving interaction with other faith-filled people |
Dorothy |
II. Affiliative Faith
|
Feeling: Belonging to an accepting community
Identifying with a community's beliefs and way of life |
Tin Man (Heart) |
III. Searching Faith
|
Thinking: Committing one's life to persons and causes
Characterized by doubt and critical judgment |
Scare Crow (Head) |
IV. Owned Faith
|
Caring / Action: Personal identification with one's own faith story
Accepting of self and of others |
Lion (Overcoming fear) |
Note:
We may go through these stages once, or cycle through them again and again in the course of our lives. For example on page 5 of this manual youll see a baseball diamond with bases for the process of Spiritual Development. We might find in our lives that we experience the Faith Development step III. (above) Searching Faith, on each base of our Spiritual Development. My personal assumption is that each time we grow spiritually, we experience a different level of doubt and of acceptance (stage IV. Owned Faith) above.
* One author refers to these steps as I. Chaotic, II. Formal, III. Skeptic, and IV. Mystic. I like to refer to these stages using characters from the movie The Wizard of Oz. The early Dorothy represents the childlike quality of ones faith. She just accepted what she experienced in Oz. The Tin Man relates to faith as one experiences it from the heart, with feeling. The Scarecrow struggles with faith from a thinking perspective. And the Lion represents action. (Even though he didnt want to in the movie, he was the one that led the rest into the witchs castle!) When we arrive at this stage of faith, we are ready to use our gifts and act on behalf of others in need. Like the lion, it may not be easy, but the situation calls us to action. |
